Warning: Scammer Clones ‘Panicked’ Relative’s Voice in Phone Calls for Money

The FTC warns of voice cloning scams using AI, where scammers mimic the voices of relatives and friends to request money.

Everyone should be warned, please pass this message along, especially to anyone over the age of 65.

If you get a phone call for a panicked loved one, verify it with your loved one first (call them back), and avoid sharing card number and PIN information.

Scammers use various methods to request money, such as wire transfers, cryptocurrency transactions, and gift card purchases, which make it difficult to retrieve lost funds.

The FTC advises people to be aware of voice cloning’s potential and not to trust the voice on the other end of the line, especially when it involves a distressing request for money.

Finally, if unable to reach a loved one, try to get in touch with them through another family member or their friends.
