According to a report and authorities, a man from Indiana passed away after falling from a 70-foot cliff in Puerto Rico while filming social media videos on Sunday.
Edgar Garay’s body was found submerged by Puerto Rico Emergency Bureau divers on Monday after he fell off the steep coastal cliff near a lighthouse in Cabo Rojo, as stated in a press release by the US Coast Guard.
The 27-year-old was visiting the southwestern coast for a day trip and was last seen alive at approximately 5:37 p.m. near the edge of the cliff, according to the US Coast Guard.
Garay’s brother Carlos stated to WTHR that Edgar was on the cliff with his cousin, who repeatedly cautioned him not to approach the edge while filming a TikTok video.
“My brother has a TikTok account that he loved to upload videos to,” Carlos Garay reportedly said. “Unfortunately, that was what he was trying to do when he was closer to the edge than he should have been.”
The grief-stricken brother informed the news channel that Garay was discovered in an underwater cavern with severe head injuries resulting from the fall.
Numerous search efforts, including the use of Jayhawk helicopters and a 154-foot fast response cutter, were conducted in an effort to locate Garay. The Coast Guard stated that several searches were carried out from Sunday night through Monday before Garay’s body was eventually found.
“We appreciate the efforts of all the Coast Guard, Puerto Rico Police and partner agency emergency responders, especially the Puerto Rico Emergency Management Bureau dive unit that was able to locate Mr. Garay’s body in such a highly inaccessible and challenging environment,” the Coast Guard Sector San Juan commander additionally said.
TikTok is a social media platform where users can create and share short-form videos, typically lasting between 15 and 60 seconds. The app has a vast selection of filters, effects, and soundtracks to add to videos, and users can interact with each other through likes, comments, and shares.
TikTok has become a hugely popular platform, with users ranging from everyday people to celebrities and influencers.
It was launched in 2016 by a Chinese tech company called ByteDance and has since become available in over 150 markets, with over a billion active users worldwide.
