Panera Bread to Scan Palms of Customers

America’s favorite gourmet fast food café, Panera Bread, has introduced biometric palm scanners for specific customers: loyalty accounts.

This has raised privacy concerns, despite being marketed as a convenient feature.

Panera has announced that it will deploy Amazon-developed biometric technology in its stores in the coming months.

The company states stated that the palm scanners, developed by Amazon, will suggest menu items based on order histories and allow personalized greetings and rewards.

Panera Bread’s CEO, Niren Chaudhary, sees the palm scanners as a “frictionless, personalized, and convenient” upgrade to their loyalty program, which has 52 million members.

Amazon’s tracking practices are also at the crux of a lawsuit filed earlier this month.
