A teenager was left stunned when he checked his bank balance to find out that he’d become a multi-millionaire.

Dane Gillespie, 18, was left baffled as he had not won the lottery but simply paid an £8,900 cheque from his gran into his account.

But the system at Nationwide Building Society misread the details and credited his account with a whopping £8.9million – 1,000 times more money than it should have done. This equates to $11,023,540 in US dollars.

His mum Caroline, from Belfast, was as shocked as she was pinged a screenshot of his “balance”, reports the Mirror.

“We couldn’t believe it. My son thought he was a millionaire for a few hours,” she said.

“There was £8.9million in his account on Wednesday morning. It’s as well he told us and didn’t go and blow it all.”

The boy wanted to spend the money but his Dad said they needed to sort it out.

It wasn’t long before Nationwide spotted the error, and his account was adjusted.
