Lolita May Return Home After 50 Years in Miami

One of Miami’s most popular attractions, Lolita the orca, was just 4 years old when she was held captive by the Miami Seaquarium.

On Thursday, a plan was announced to return Lolita the Orca to her “home waters” in the Pacific Ocean, more than 50 years after she was captured and held at the Miami Seaquarium for decades.

In 1970, Lolita, also known as Tokitae, a southern resident orca, was taken from the waters of Washington state.

At around 57 years old, the orca is considered to be the oldest captive orca.

Lolita’s health had deteriorated in recent years, leading to increased scrutiny of her living conditions at the Miami Seaquarium.

Animal rights activists have for years advocated for Lolita to be moved back to her home pod in Puget Sound
