Italy Says “No” to Eating Lab Grown Meat

Italians don’t want fake meat to interfere with family and food traditions, and is fighting back against eating lab grown meat.

Italy’s agriculture minister informed the press that the government has passed a bill prohibiting the use of lab-made food and animal feed in order to protect the country’s agricultural and food heritage.

According to the bill viewed by Reuters, Italian businesses would be prohibited from producing food or feed using “cell cultures or tissues sourced from vertebrate animals” if the proposal is approved by parliament.

“Laboratory products in our opinion do not guarantee quality, well-being and the protection of our culture, our tradition,” said Minister Francesco Lollobrigida

Lollobrigida is a senior member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing Brothers of Italy party.

The bill stipulates that factories where violations occur can be shut down and producers may lose their right to obtain public funding for up to three years.
